Great athletes don’t always make great coaches.
Finding a job is hard, but it is the beginning, not the end, of career challenges. Just like it’s important to define success while searching for a job that aligns with your expectations, determining your intentions within a company are also important. How do you define success in your new role?
- Is there a path to promotion?
- Are you hoping to become a manager?
- Do you want to lead a team?
- Will you own a project?
As you establish yourself within an organization, you’ll find that some opportunities are obvious while others seem obscure. Large, legacy businesses have a clear hierarchy and progression path. Within smaller businesses and startups, growth might be undefined. Knowing what you want will allow you to look for opportunities and ask better questions of superiors.
There are three paths within an organization: Individual Contributor, People Manager, and Principle. While some require more experience than others, they are not necessarily linear. Each organization views the paths differently.
